Writing a Winning Application

Your application is your first impression. With hundreds of candidates competing for each place, a sharp, tailored application is what gets you to the next stage. Here's how to make yours stand out.

Research before you write

Before typing a single word, understand the employer:

  • What does the company actually do, and who are its customers?
  • What are its stated values, and how do they show up in the role?
  • What does the apprenticeship involve day to day?

Reference this understanding throughout your answers — generic applications are obvious and forgettable.

Answering "why this apprenticeship?"

This is the most common question, and the most important. A strong answer connects three things:

  1. Your genuine interest in the field or industry.
  2. Something specific about this employer that appeals to you.
  3. Your longer-term goal and how this programme helps you reach it.

Use the STAR method

For competency questions ("Describe a time you worked in a team"), structure your answer with STAR:

  • Situation — set the scene briefly.
  • Task — what you needed to achieve.
  • Action — what you specifically did.
  • Result — the outcome, ideally measurable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Spelling and grammar errors — always proofread, then proofread again.
  • Copy-pasting answers between applications without adapting them.
  • Being vague — specifics and evidence beat buzzwords every time.
  • Missing the deadline — submit with time to spare.

A great application takes time. Treat each one seriously and your effort will show.
